(-)-Bornyl acetate induces autonomic relaxation and reduces arousal level after visual display terminal work without any influences of task performance in low-dose condition

Abstract: ABSTRACT(−)-Bornyl acetate is the main volatile constituent in numerous conifer oils and has a camphoraceous, pine-needle-like odor. It is frequently used as the conifer needle composition in soap, bath products, room sprays, and pharmaceutical products. However, the psychophysiological effects of (−)-bornyl acetate remained unclear. We investigated the effects of breathing air mixed with (−)-bornyl acetate at different doses (low-dose and high-dose conditions) on the individuals during and after VDT (visual d… Show more

“…11) Bornyl acetate, which is a component of forest air induces the autonomic nervous system to relax. 14) Four healthy volunteers walked for 60 min in a forest located at Tsubetsu. Figure 3a shows the GC-mass chromatogram of blood from one subject in the morning before the forest walk.…”

“…Compared with the control condition, the participants' heart rate and alpha band power after the task in the presence of Siberian fir leaf oil were decreased and the theta band power was increased. Matsubara et al [56] also investigated the effects of (-)-bornyl acetate, one of main components contained in the leaves of the Siberian fir, following the same experimental design. After the VDT task in the presence of (-)-bornyl acetate, the sympathetic nervous activity was decreased and the theta band powers increased compared with task performed under the control condition.…”

“…The odorant delivery system (illustrated in Fig. 2, (19)(20)(21)(22)) was controlled by a constant-flow olfactometer that forced air at a constant rate of 1.0 L min −1 through Teflon tubing into a charcoal trap. The air was then put in a 300-mL glass chamber (Sansyo, Tokyo, Japan) with or without the V. zizanioides roots.…”

“…Although the roots of V. zizanioides have been used as described above since ancient times, and impressions of the volatiles of the roots were different from those of the essential oil, the effects of the volatiles directly emitted from the roots of V. zizanioides have not been explored. We previously established an experimental method to evaluate the effects of aromatic herbs in relation to the performance of a visual discrimination task (19)(20)(21)(22). Aromatic herbs act through olfactory pathways in the brain, including the cerebral cortex, hypothalamus and amygdala, which are different from the visual transduction and processing path-…”
