BorreliaBase: a phylogeny-centered browser of Borrelia genomes

Abstract: BackgroundThe bacterial genus Borrelia (phylum Spirochaetes) consists of two groups of pathogens represented respectively by B. burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme borreliosis, and B. hermsii, the agent of tick-borne relapsing fever. The number of publicly available Borrelia genomic sequences is growing rapidly with the discovery and sequencing of Borrelia strains worldwide. There is however a lack of dedicated online databases to facilitate comparative analyses of Borrelia genomes.DescriptionWe have developed Borr… Show more

“…mayonii chromosomes using a progressive Mauve 2.4.0 alignment [28]. The Mauve alignment was compared to the Core Genome comparison tool available at www.borreliabase.org [29]. Ideograms of each annotated plasmid were generated using CViT 1.2.1 (linear) and Circos 0.69 (circular) [30, 31].…”

“…(e) Extremophiles: Many, if not all, of these organisms (Supplementary Material 2) live in various degrees of extreme habitats and often derive energy from the reduction of exotic substrates. For example, Desulfotalea psychrophila is a marine, sulfate-reducing, deltaproteobacterium that is ice-dwelling (sympagic) and can grow at subzero temperatures (Rabus et al 2004); Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a psychrotroph that infects diverse species of cold water salmon and trout (Duchaud et al 2007;Nematollahi et al 2003); Psychroflexus torquis represents a group of Antarctic ice-derived psychrophilic proteobacteria (Feng et al 2014); Borrelia hermsii, causative agent of tick-borne relapsing fever (Di et al 2014), must survive at the febrile temperature resulting from the host's response to the parasite. Lastly, nearly all Flavobacteria and many Spirochetes use a large variety of substrates and are also flexible in this behavior.…”

“…Interestingly, while B. burgdorferi and B. afzelii have been shown to express FH binding proteins, previous studies have shown that most strains of B. garinii are serum sensitive and that orthologs of the major FH binding proteins, which are all encoded on plasmids, are not found in the majority of B. garinii strains (36,54). However, all borrelial isolates sequenced thus far encode orthologs of chromosomally encoded BB0405 and BB0406, irrespective of their serum resistance or sensitivity phenotype (55). Consistent with the finding that all serum-sensitive strains identified to date also contain orthologs of BB0405 and BB0406, we did not observe a role for BB0405, BB0406, BG0407, or BAPKO_0422 in FH binding.…”
