Boswellia serrata extract for the treatment of collagenous colitis. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial

Abstract: Our study suggests that BSE might be clinically effective in patients with collagenous colitis. Larger trials are clearly necessary to establish the clinical efficacy of BSE.

“…11 In clinical research, positive effects of boswellic acids in the treatment of inflammatory diseases could be shown. 3,12 There exist clinical trials about the use of boswellic acids in asthma, 13 rheumatoid arthritis, 14 Crohn disease, 15 collagenous colitis, 16 and osteoarthritis of the knee. 17,18 To our knowledge, there exist only first clinical observation results for the treatment of cerebral edema by boswellic acids.…”

“…Further, both Ayurveda and Unani systems of medicine have indicated its external as well as internal use in a number of inflammatory conditions (Anonymous, 2007;Chatterjee and Pal, 1984;Khare, 2004;Kirtikar and Basu, 1935). Based on traditional relevance, medicinal and pharmacological potential of the resin has been scientifically evaluated for arthritis, asthma, colitis and many other inflammatory conditions (Moussaieffa and Mechoulamb, 2009;Siddiqui, 2011;Gupta et al, 2011;Madisch et al, 2007). The standard oleo-gum resin generally consists of triterpenoidal principles, essential oils, and carbohydrates.…”

“…Despite its traditional claims, Boswellia extracts are ineffective in ameliorating colitis in DSS-induced colitis in mice (Kiela et al, 2004). In contrast to animal studies, a double-blind, randomized, placebocontrolled, multicenter trial in colitis patients showed higher remission in Boswellia serrata extract treated group than in the pacebo group (Madisch et al, 2007). However, a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel study in patients with Crohn's disease has shown no difference between the Boswellia treated group and control group in disease remission (Holtmeier et al, 2011).…”
