Botanical Studies on Mont St. Hilaire, Rouvillecounty, Quebec: General Description of the Area and a Floristic Survey

Abstract: The Monteregian Hills are a series of eight mountains, intrusive in nature, which form a distinct petrographical province in the St. Lawrence Lowlands of Southern Quebec. Mont St. Hilaire, one of the larger members of the group, was bequeathed to McGill University as a natural area for scientific research in 1959 by the late Brigadier A. Hamilton Gault. “…Plants of both species reproduce via cleistogamous and chasmogamous flowers, with the latter flower type typically being produced only on larger individuals. The I. pal/ida populations studied occurred on relatively dry ground in two separate valleys in a beech-maple forest at Mont St. Hilaire, Quebec, Canada (Maycock, 1961). The I. capensis populations occupied sites directly adjacent to streams or wet depressions at Mont St. Hilaire.…”

“…We sampled within an extensive population of I. pallida inhabiting a beech-maple forest on Mont St. Hilaire, Quebec, Canada (Maycock, 1961). In late April 1985, 24 point locations were randomly selected within a 30 x 40 meter area in this population.…”

“…However, the original forest in MSH has remained intact because MSH was not appropriate as agricultural land. MSH is dominated by many deciduous broad-leaved tree species (Maycock 1961). Many trees exceed 150 years in age, and a few are over 400 years old (Cook 1971).…”
