Botulin Toxin Use in Rosacea and Facial Flushing Treatment

Abstract: Botulinum toxin (BTX) is a neurotoxin derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium that inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction level whose effects has been used for many years to treat a variety of muscular/neuromuscular conditions and more recently also for cosmetic use. BTX has experimented in some dermatological conditions, which include Rosacea and facial flushing treatment with good results. The complex mechanism underlying those results is not completely understood … Show more

“…Recently, Botox has been introduced as a therapeutic method in the treatment of rosacea: it seems its actions take place through the nervous system by lowering local vascularity, but the mode of action and efficacy are yet to be fully evaluated [41].…”

“…Some innate or acquired immune dysfunctions are often associated with several neurovascular dysfunctions, with a genetic component underlying the appearance of rosacea [42]. These dysfunctions are directly or indirectly associated Demodex Folliculorum (DF) (through its own bacteria endosymbiosis, or other bacteria unrelated to DF such as Staphylococcus), epidermidis, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, extreme temperatures, stress, congestive foods, and the presence of metabolic syndrome or diabetes mellitus [38][39][40][41]. DF has been shown to have Bacillus bacteria endosymbionts such as Bacillus Oleronius, Bacillus Pumilus, Bacilus simplex, Cereus or Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii [44][45][46].…”

“…Botulinum toxin (BTX) is a neurotoxin derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium that inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction level. 10 Besides its effects on muscles, the blockade of acetylcholine release from peripheral autonomic nerves of the cutaneous vasodilatory system could inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators such as substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which have a relevant effect on vasodilation 11 and also reduce skin inflammation by directly inhibiting mast cell degranulation. 12 Based on the effects on blood vessels and inflammation, BTX injection has been progressively applied on rosacea patients with refractory erythema and flushing.…”
