Bovine pericardium (Tutopatch) wrap for hydroxyapatite implants

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate bovine pericardium (Tutopatch s ) as a wrapping material for hydroxyapatite implants in patients undergoing enucleation for uveal melanoma. Method Prospective cohort study of patients who had enucleation for uveal melanoma between January 2003 and August 2003 were included in the study. Any patient with less than 3 months follow-up was excluded. Enucleation was performed under general anaesthesia followed by insertion of hydroxyapatite implants wrapped in bovine pericardium (Tutopatch). The… Show more

“…21 The wrap of hydroxyapatite implants with Tutopatch has been suggested as a safe alternative in patients who undergo enucleation for uveal melanoma, with a low rate of complications and a decreased surgical time compared to the wrap with autologous tissue that needs to be harvested. 22 In glaucoma surgery, a double layer of Tutopatch has been suggested to be useful for the implantation of an Ahmed valve in a patient with anterior necrotizing scleritis. 23 Although perforations were small (0.5-1.5 mm) and the standard treatment for them could be corneal gluing with bandage contact lens, we preferred to use the Tutopatch because of the big area of corneal melting surrounding the perforation.…”

“…Complications due to bovine pericardium used to cover acrylic implants after enucleation and tubes of aqueous devices Bovine pericardium has been described for wrapping of hydroxyapatite implants [1][2][3][4][5] and Ahmed devices. Owing to a shortage of human scleral graft (HSG), we decided to switch to tutopatch for coverage of acrylic implants after enucleation and aqueous devices.…”
