“…We can compare results in prematures with those obtained in our earlier studies on full-term newborns, because, except for the treatment of REMs, we used similar analytic methods. However, we cannot easily compare our results with those of Parmelee et al (1967) who considered each period of 20 sec separately without reference to what occurred before and after; or with those of Schulte et al (1969) who disregarded periods of variations shorter than 3 min, since we disregarded variations lasting less than I min. We have also differentiated between body and localized motility and diffuse jerks, and have indicated the limits of the regular respiratory rate, both of which have not been generally done.…”

“…Studies in the human newborn have dem onstrated abnormalities in sleep patterns in infants of diabetic mothers [13], in small for AGA infants of toxemic mothers [14], and in infants whose mothers were alcoholic [15]. Documentation of active and quiet periods of fetal activity in the normal appropriate for gestational age fetus may provide not only a baseline with which to compare specific groups of fetuses at risk, such as the diabetic, hypertensive and drug-abusing patient, but may also provide a basic for beginning stud ies on the origin of human behavioral matu ration.…”
