Brain eigenfrequency shifting as a sensitive index of cerebral compliance in an experimental model of epidural hematoma in the rabbit

Abstract: Changes of the brain's physical characteristics by mass addition in the cranial vault can be expressed by brain eigenfrequency shifting. The method seems advantageous because it reliably detects mass additions at low levels where no ICP change occurs. Additionally, it provides serial measurements, and it is less invasive than the currently used methods for intracranial compliance.

“…Esse mesmo método foi realizado com êxito por Douzinas et al (1999) (Çagavi et al, 2005). Nesses animais, foi realizada a craniotomia descompressiva e verificado deslocamento do cerebelo através do forame magno, caracterizando herniação foraminal.…”

“…In this experimental study, we have used a previously established model of TBI in rabbits which has been developed by our group [17]. In the aforementioned model, a 5-Fr balloon-tipped catheter is placed in the epidural space of rabbits, while gradual infusion of autologous blood results in the reproduction of a mass effect due to the implanted epidural hematoma [17].…”

“…However, the reality is much different, as it has been shown by Douzinas et al, (1999), since the eigenfrequency pattern exhibits a more complex behavior.…”
