Brain Glutathione and GABA+ levels in autistic children

Yulu Song,
Kathleen E. Hupfeld,
Christopher W. Davies-Jenkins
et al.

Abstract: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication challenges and repetitive behaviors. Altered neurometabolite levels, including glutathione (GSH) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), have been proposed as potential contributors to the biology underlying ASD. This study investigated whether cerebral GSH or GABA levels differ between a large cohort of children aged 8-12 years with ASD (n=52) and typically developing children (TDC, n=49). A comprehensive analys… Show more

“…Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a widely used noninvasive neuroimaging technique for measuring brain metabolism in vivo. While measurement of low-concentration brain metabolites (e.g., gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutathione (GSH)) has been challenging with conventional MRS, recent methodological advances in our laboratory have enabled edited MRS to simultaneously measure levels of multiple low-concentration, coupled metabolites 32,33 . Briefly, the Hadamard Editing Resolves Chemicals Using Linear-combination Estimation of Spectra (HERCULES) 34 editing scheme enables the extraction of distinct edited spectra from different Hadamard combinations.…”
