Braking performance simulation for a tractor-semitrailer vehicle with an air brake system

Abstract: Recently safety systems for commercial vehicles have been developed rapidly. However, there are still many problems in the vehicle stability and the braking performance. In particular, a commercial vehicle may meet a dangerous braking condition when the vehicle is lightly loaded or empty and when the road is wet or slippery. Under these conditions, the truck can spin out, the tractor can jackknife or the trailer can swing out. To design an air brake system for a commercial vehicle, since the air brake system h… Show more

“…The main factors affecting braking performance are vehicle weight, the structure of the braking system, braking effectiveness of the front-rear wheels, the design of the braking system, the condition of the brake hydraulic and mechanical parts, the environmental conditions that may affect the braking system, the condition of the tires, the load on the vehicle, road conditions, braking settings, the wheel -is the coefficient of friction and adhesion between the road [3]. However, there are still many problems in the vehicle stability and the braking performance [4]. Load sensing brake proportioning is a means of optimizing the ratio of front-to-rear wheel retarding forces for the full range of vehicle loadings and decelerations [5].…”

“…A scheme for pressure control in air brakes was developed by Bowlin et al 5 The dynamic characteristics of a pneumatic antilock braking system (ABS) solenoid valve were studied by Chu et al 6 A brake condition monitoring system was developed by Kandt et al; 7 this system analysed the air pressure data and used it to determine the push rod stroke. A 14-degrees-of-freedom mathematical model for a tractor semi-trailer vehicle was constructed and the dynamic braking characteristics were studied by Suh et al 8 The brake system was approximated as a linear first-order system and the build-up time was selected as the input parameter.…”
