Branched tetraether lipids in Chinese soils: Evaluating the fidelity of MBT/CBT proxies as paleoenvironmental proxies

Abstract: The ubiquitous occurrence of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) in soils has allowed development of new proxies for reconstruction of past climate and environment. The methylation and cyclization degrees of brGDGTs, expressed as MBT and CBT, respectively, are reported to be mainly controlled by mean annual air temperature (MAAT) and soil pH. However, the brGDGT-derived temperatures and soil pH scatter widely when data from different environmental conditions are considered. In this study, … Show more

“…The January daily temperature varies between 0 °C and 15 °C. During summer months between May and September the daily high temperature often reaches 30 °C to 35 °C 33 . All samples from the 47 sites were obtained from local nature reserves to minimize the impacts of human activity.…”

“…Molecular biomarkers preserved in sedimentary archives provide valuable information on changes in paleoenvironments and climates (Summons et al, 2022). A suite of bacterial cell membrane lipids called branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are among these biomarkers that are ubiquitously distributed in virtually all ecosystems, including soils, peats, rivers, lakes, and marine environments (Tierney and Russell, 2009;Schouten et al, 2013;Günther et al, 2014;Zheng et al, 2016). BrGDGTs consist of two alkyl chains bound by ether bonds to two glycerol moieties, which are distinguished by the number and position of methyl branches and cyclopentane rings on the alkyl chains (Sinninghe Damstéet al, 2000;De Jonge et al, 2013).…”

“…For instance, in an extensive set of soils from humid, semi-humid to semi-arid and arid regions in China, the MBT/CBT derived temperatures matched the measured MATs better in humid and no-alkaline regions (Zheng et al, 2016). In our study, MAT was particularly underestimated in the estimates derived from the brGDGT indices in the more alkaline soils from Montcortés (Ms3) where pH values were higher.…”
