Brazilian children performance on Rey’s auditory verbal learning paradigm

Abstract: -The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning paradigm is worldwide used in clinical and research settings. There is consensus about its psychometric robustessness and that its various scores provide relevant information about different aspects of memory and learning. However, there are only a few studies in Brazil employing this paradigm and none of them with children. This paper describes the performance of 119 Brazilian children in a version of Rey´s paradigm. The correlations between scores showed the internal consist… Show more

“…A sample size of n = 30 was recruited for five, 2‐year age groupings. This sample size is consistent with those used in normative data collections for similar psychometric tools (e.g., the Trail Making Test as cited in Spreen & Strauss, ; and, child and adolescent norms for the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test; Oliveira & Charchat‐Fichman, ). The stratification of the age groupings was chosen to match the normative data available in the complimentary Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT; Smith, ), which can be used in adults and children to discriminate impairment in graphomotor ability from cerebral dysfunction.…”

“…This test evaluates verbal anterograde episodic memory, learning, and executive function. In the present study, we used the version of Oliveira and Charchat-Fichman (2008) that uses two lists (A and B), each with 12 nouns. List A is read four times by the evaluator.…”

“…This test assesses memory aspects by means of verbal stimuli, as well as learning ability. In the present study, we used the test constructed by Oliveira and Charchat-Fichman 18 which is based on the RAVl paradigm. The RAVLT constructed by these authors is a more appropriate version for Brazilian children and provides results similar to those of the traditional RAVLT.…”
