Brazing mechanisms of the Ti 2 AlC joints using a pure Al filler metal

Abstract: Brazing of Ti 2 AlC ceramics has been successfully performed using a pure Al filler metal, in the temperature range 1023 K-1173 K and with holding time ranging from 0 min to 30 min. The microstructure of the Ti 2 AlC joints was studied, and the mechanical properties of the joints were evaluated by shear strength test. It is observed that the Al filler has weak effect on the stability of Ti 2 AlC substrate, and only a small amount of decomposition products including the TiC x and TiAl 3 compounds can be observe… Show more

“…MAX phase compounds (M is an early transition metal, A is an A group element, X is carbon or nitrogen) with the P63/mmc space group, have attracted more attention in recent years due to the excellent combination of metallic and ceramic properties, [1][2][3][4][5] including good thermal and electrical conductivity, low coefficient of thermal expansion and superior machinability. To date, more than 150 kinds of MAX phases have been discovered, [6,7] most of which belong to 211, 312 and 413 phase.…”

“…The filler foil is well known with its properties that owns excellent chemical homogeneity, wettability and good flexibility [12]. The brazing holding time needs to take into account because it may reinforce the filler interaction [13] in joining porous metal foam. During the brazing process, the kinetics of filler diffusion and the interaction of the filler depends on the brazing holding time to form the joint interface.…”
