Breaking up gigabit ethernet's VoIP bottlenecks

Abstract: GIGABIT ETHERNET IS A POPULAR BROADBAND technology for good reason. It not only can transfer large amounts of data through a large network at high speeds, but it also is a mature technology with an appealing performance to cost-of-ownership ratio. Unfortunately, though, gigabit Ethernet suffers a performance drop when it is handling traffic with small packets: it tends to lose them. This is a serious problem because small packets have become important in many real-time applications-in Voice over Internet Proto… Show more

“…VoIP over wired networks has many breakthroughs. Walravens and Gaidioz [ 10 ] presented a technique called receive descriptor recycling (RDR) that can reduce small-packet loss by 40%. Also the most popular applications such as Skype therefore become the research focus [ 11 , 12 ].…”

“…VoIP is the most important application among many low-cost and real-time communication ones. However, the VoIP technique still encounters many challenges such as packet collision and loss due to common circuits, material delay [ 3 ]. The challenges may result in a poor voice quality.…”

“…Figure 2 shows the detailed diagram of Processor module used in this study: MPC850 with a speed of 50 MHz developed by Motorola as well as 2 MB FROM and 8 MB SDRAM. It was made up so that one RJ45 port can be linked to Internet and the other RJ45 port to inside network through a connection of mpc850 Ethernet port 5, 6.…”

“…On the other hand, the gigantic data traffics on the next generation of Internet have also been investigated [8]- [10]. C. Walravens et al [8] studied the high-rate, small packet traffic in an Ethernet controller and used a technique called receive descriptor recycling (RDR) to reduce the small-packet loss by 40%. N. Laoutaris et al [9] proposed using this already-paid-for off-peak capacity to perform global delay-tolerant bulk data transfers on the Internet.…”
