Breakthrough treatments for accelerated wound healing

Abstract: Skin injuries across the body continue to disrupt everyday life for millions of patients and result in prolonged hospital stays, infection, and death. Advances in wound healing devices have improved clinical practice but have mainly focused on treating macroscale healing versus underlying microscale pathophysiology. Consensus is lacking on optimal treatment strategies using a spectrum of wound healing products, which has motivated the design of new therapies. We summarize advances in the development of novel d… Show more

“…Wound healing is a complex and well-coordinated process that involves several stages, including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling . Any disruptions in these stages can lead to aberrant wound tissue repair, primarily resulting in chronic wounds or hypertrophic scars. The use of wound dressings significantly enhances the wound repair process. These dressings not only protect the wound surface but also assist in coordinating the four stages of repair. Effective wound dressings are characterized by their exceptional hemostatic properties, anti-inflammatory effects, moisture retention capabilities, and biocompatibility. , As a result, the design and development of advanced wound dressings have become a central focus in the field of biomedicine.…”

“…According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people aged 80 years or older is expected to triple between 2020 and 2050 to reach 426 million, increasing the load on government healthcare services. Furthermore, the hazards related to human activities, such as increased sports activity, increased injuries for humans resulting in an increasing demand for wound care products, including products used for wound management and prevention of chronic wounds. , Human skin works as a barrier from pathogens, but cuts and severe injuries create a wound by removing that barrier. Open wounds need to be managed for days to weeks until they are fully healed or can be closed.…”

“…Combining structural engineering with multiple biological functionalization using antimicrobial agents in addition to wound microenvironment regulators and regenerative biotherapeutics, e.g., growth factors, gene expression regulators, and cells, are rapidly evolving as multifunctional or 'all in one' strategies for effective acceleration of the healing process [8][9][10]. In this context, antimicrobial agents play a crucial role in clearing up infection at the wound site, reducing the risk of necrosis and lower limb amputation.…”
