Breast cancer screening with digital breast tomosynthesis - 4 year experience and comparison with national data

Abstract: There was a 32.2% increase in CDR and a 17.8% decrease in RR when DBT was used as an adjunct to DM, as compared to DM alone. CDRs were approximately twofold better than national average data. DBT was more effective at detecting cancer in ductal carcinoma in situ and stage 1.

“…A number of studies in which Hologic systems are used to detect cancer agree that there is an increase in detection rate with the addition of DBT to DM; however, there is a conflict on whether this increase is significant 37,38,42,43,47,48,5761,6368,70,71,75–77,80. Specifically, for ductal carcinoma in situ (an entity often presenting as microcalcifications), a significant difference was found in favor of DM&DBT versus DM alone 65…”

“…The breast tomosynthesis is a three-dimensional image presentation of the breast utilizing X-rays [15], it is not deliberated as regular analysis of breast cancer. The breast tomosynthesis consumes several images of the breast at various angles.…”

“…DBT has been found to be superior to digital mammography (DM) in diagnostic settings for early detection and has improved diagnostic ability of breast cancer detection [1][2][3][4][5] and improved outcomes from breast screening programs. [6][7][8][9] It has been approved for use as an adjunct to twodimensional (2D) mammography for breast cancer screening in several countries 8,9 and has been investigated in several large prospective population-based trials. 10 Digital breast tomosynthesis produces a stack of 2D image slices and a pseudo three-dimensional (3D) image set, of the breast by taking multiple low-dose images per view or projections along an arc over the breast.…”

“…In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) which is rapidly increasing worldwide. DBT has been found to be superior to digital mammography (DM) in diagnostic settings for early detection and has improved diagnostic ability of breast cancer detection 1–5 and improved outcomes from breast screening programs 6–9 . It has been approved for use as an adjunct to two‐dimensional (2D) mammography for breast cancer screening in several countries 8,9 and has been investigated in several large prospective population‐based trials 10 …”
