Breast Milk and the Importance of Chrononutrition

Abstract: During pregnancy the human fetus receives timed cues from the circadian rhythms of temperature, metabolites, and hormones from the mother. This influence is interrupted after parturition, the infant does not secrete melatonin and their circadian rhythms are still immature. However, evolution provided the solution to this problem. The newborn can continue receiving the mother's timed cues through breastmilk. Colostrum, transitional, and mature human milk are extraordinary complex biofluids that besides nutrient… Show more

“…Melatonin production and circadian rhythms do not develop in babies until around three months [ 7 ]. Breastfed babies have the benefit of melatonin from their mother’s milk [ 8 ]. Levels from infancy to adolescence increase and plateau in association with Tanner stages of puberty and then slowly decline with age starting in the late twenties [ 9 , 10 ].…”

“…In TF1000DL, optimizing the provision of nutrients supports the development of the fetus, maintains maternal health in preparation for the puerperium and breastfeeding, and helps prepare infants and toddlers to grow and develop optimally. Chrono-nutrition during breastfeeding is an important strategy to promote health and cognitive and behavioral neurodevelopment in infants ( 64 ).…”

“…A further mechanism by which maternal circadian rhythm can influence that of the infant is via breast milk. Numerous benefits of breastfeeding have been established, but the influence of feeding method on the development of an infant's circadian rest-activity rhythm has only recently been examined in small samples (Caba-Flores et al, 2022). Results suggest that breastfed infants develop a more regular circadian rest-activity rhythm, and obtain this earlier, than mixed breast/bottle fed infants (Kikuchi et al, 2020), and have better sleep parameters (Abdul Jafar et al, 2021).…”
