Breastfeeding Intention Compared With Breastfeeding Postpartum Among Women Receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment

Abstract: Despite most women reporting a high prenatal intention to breastfeed, exclusive breastfeeding at hospital discharge postpartum was low. Breastfeeding was associated with a decreased likelihood of pharmacological treatment for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome.

“… Low rates of breastfeeding initiation and continuation are seen in this population of women in the United States. The largest of the studies, conducted in New Mexico with a sample of 228 women reported that, although more than 80% of women on opioid maintenance therapy reported an intention to breastfeed, 31.4% and 19.6% of the women on buprenorphine and methadone, respectively, were exclusively breastfeeding at discharge .
