Breeding Aspects of Selected Ornamental Bulbous Crops

Abstract: This article provides an overview of the origin, genetic diversity and methods and trends in breeding of selected ornamental geophytes (Lilium, Tulipa, Narcissus and Hippeastrum). The role of interspecific hybridisation and polyploidisation in assortment development is reviewed. A great variety of cultivars with traits of interest have been generated over the last century by using classical breeding. Geophyte breeders have been interested in a diversity of traits, including resistance to diseases, flower colou… Show more

“…A new flower shape and cold-tolerant intraspecific ( Campanula carpatica ‘White’) and interspecific ( C. medium and C. formanekiana ) hybrid, respectively, were developed in bellflowers [ 238 ]. Interspecific hybrids, haploids, or double haploids were developed in rose [ 239 , 240 , 241 ], tulip [ 242 ], lisianthus [ 243 ], lily [ 244 ], day lily [ 245 ], calla lily [ 246 ], alstroemeria or peruvian lily [ 247 , 248 , 249 , 250 ], Primula [ 251 , 252 ], night-blooming cactus [ 253 , 254 , 255 ], gentian [ 256 , 257 , 258 ], Camellia [ 259 ], begonia [ 260 ], Christmas bells or golden lily of the valley [ 261 ], carnation [ 262 , 263 ], Gypsophila [ 264 ], Rhododendron [ 265 ], cyclamen [ 266 ], and ornamental alliums [ 267 , 268 ]. Embry rescue has been widely studied for crop improvement, while its current research has been reduced by the rapid evolution of advanced molecular breeding.…”

“…Polyploidization through 2 n gametes represents a new trend in breeding of ornamental plants ( Ramanna et al, 2012 ; Marasek-Ciolakowska et al, 2021 ). This is mainly due to the following factors: (1) Ornamental plants are prized by their novelty and esthetic appearance, including flower shape, size, and color; leaf shape, texture, color, and size; plant overall growth form and growth vigor ( Henny and Chen, 2003 ).…”

“…Approximately 70% of angiosperms have undergone polyploidisation, including whole genome duplication (WGD), during species development [1,2]. Polyploidy may result from the functioning of 2n gametes (meiotic doubling), distant hybridisation followed by chromosome doubling, or induced through artificial chromosome doubling (mitotic polyploidisation) [3,4]. The rate of 2n gamete production in plants is low.…”

“…According to Ramsey and Schemske [6], distant hybridisation increase the frequency of unreduced gamete production. Meiotic polyploidisation via crossing with 2n gamete producing genotypes is one of the main methods currently used to obtain polyploidy tulip [4]. Similarly, in Lilium many triploid hybrids have resulted from the use of unreduced gametes [4].…”
