A concise overview is given on materials applied in fusion technology. The influence of plasma operation on the behaviour of reactor components and diagnostic systems is discussed with emphasis on effects caused by fast particles reaching the reactor wall. Issues related to primary and induced radioactivity are reviewed: tritium inventory and transmutation. Tritium breeding in the reactor blanket, separation of hydrogen isotopes and safety aspects in handling radioactively contaminated components are also included.

One of the main research and development issues concerning the test blanket module (TBM) is the development of joining technologies for fabrication of the first wall. The objectives of the present study are to investigate the effects of thermal history corresponding to the TBM fabrication process on reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steel microstructure, and to establish the appropriate hot isostatic pressure (HIP) conditions for the fabrication of RAFM/RAFM steels and beryllium (Be)/RAFM steels joints without degradation of the mechanical properties of the RAFM steel or delamination of the joined interface. In this study, RAFM and RAFM steels were joined by HIPing at 1050°C under 100 MPa for 2 h. During the HIP process, the thermally altered microstructure and mechanical properties were recovered to the as-received state by subsequent normalizing at 950°C for 2 h and tempering at 750°C for 2 h. Be and RAFM steels were also bonded successfully by the application of Ti/Cu interlayers and HIPing at 850°C under 100 MPa for 2 h.

VOCALVOCAL VOCAL 1 AGRADECIMIENTOS Esta tesis está dedicada a todas aquellas personas que habéis estado presentes en mi vida todos estos años y que, de una u otra manera habéis contribuido a que sea una realidad.Me gustaría empezar por Ángela porque ahí empezó todo. Después de hacer nuestros pinitos juntas tratando de simular una corriente de litio líquido (por aquel entonces poco sabía yo de IFMIF) me propusiste continuar contigo, en el CIEMAT. Enseguida conectamos, y mucho, y la aventura comenzó. No tardaste en ponerme al teléfono con un investigador que se encontraba en Alemania. Se llamaba Ángel Ibarra. Lleno de entusiasmo y mil ideas, como siempre, sentaríais entre los dos las bases para este trabajo ¡y muchos otros! En los peores momentos siempre habéis estado ahí, tanto personales, que ha habido algunos, como laborales, haciéndome mejor profesional e inculcándome los valores del rigor científico.
