Breeding for Biotic Stress Resistance in Pea

Diego Rubiales,
Eleonora Barilli,
Nicolas Rispail

Abstract: Pea (Pisum sativum) stands out as one of the most significant and productive cool-season pulse crops cultivated worldwide. Dealing with biotic stresses remains a critical challenge in fully harnessing pea’s potential productivity. As such, dedicated research and developmental efforts are necessary to make use of omic resources and advanced breeding techniques. These approaches are crucial in facilitating the rapid and timely development of high-yielding varieties that can tolerate and resist multiple stresses.… Show more

“…It has also been reported that E. trifolii causes powdery mildew in peas and Lathyrus spp. It is severe only in late-planted nurseries in Cordoba and, normally, in India with higher temperatures during the crop season [24,[32][33][34][35]. This is also what we found on faba beans, with infection only occurring in late-planted nurseries.…”

“…Resistance to Fusarium crown rot also has been widely reported in wheat and barley, in most cases being associated with non-pathogen-specific quantitative trait loci (QTLs) [44]. Similarly, QTLs associated with resistance to Fusarium root rot have also been identified in peas [45,46], as has a partial resistance or tolerance to root rot in soybeans [42]. There are limited reports, however, of a resistance or an enhanced tolerance in faba beans [47], canola [29], lentils [48], or lupine [49].…”
