Breeding Season Time and Energy Budgets of the Polyandrous Spotted Sandpiper

Abstract: The study was conducted from early May to early August 1975-77 on a 1.6 ha island in north-central Minnesota. All breeding spotted sandpipers were colour-ringed. Time budgets were determined for 10 females and 23 males by instantaneous sampling (at 15-second intervals) of 10 predetermined behaviours. A total of 1,899 30-minute samples (2 birds each) yielded 308,817 data points when birds were visible. Terrestrial arthropod abundance was sampled by cylindrical sticky traps at 12 locations for 48 hours per week.… Show more

“…relatively more time incubating eggs (Clutton-Brock, 1991b). However, in some bi-parental birds parental roles are reversed, males showing higher levels of parental care than females (spotted sandpiper, Maxson & Oring, 1980;Eurasian dotteral, Kålås & Byrkjedal, 1984;killdeer, Brunton, 1988;little spotted kiwi, Jolly, 1989). In these cases males are smaller than females (Jehl & Murray, 1986;Clutton-Brock, 1991b).…”

“…In 1986 and 1987 hormonal studies that might have affected MS or RS were conducted; therefore, these years were omitted from this analysis. A detailed description of the study area and an account of the population biology of spotted sandpipers can be found elsewhere (Maxson and Oring 1980;Lank 1982, 1986;Oring et al 1983;Lank et al 1985).…”

“…In i^innesota, adult male mass averages about 40 g. while the larger females average approximately 48 g (Maxson and Oring 1980;Oring and Lank 1986). In the breeding season, it is olive brown above with black spots below and in winter it is all brown.…”
