Abstract.There are major discrepancies between recent ICFT (Intermediate Coupling Frame Transformation) and DARC (Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code) calculations (Fernández-Menchero et al. 2014, Astron. Astroph. 566 A104, Aggarwal et al. 2016 Mon. Not. R. Astr. Soc. 461 3997) regarding electron-impact excitation rates for transitions in several Be-like ions, as well as claims that the DARC calculations are much more accurate and the ICFT results might even be wrong. To identify possible reasons for these discrepancies and to estimate the accuracy of the various results, we carried out independent B-Spline R-Matrix (BSR) calculations for electron-impact excitation of the Be-like ion N 3+ . Our close-coupling expansions contain the same target states (238 levels overall) as the previous ICFT and DARC calculations, but the representation of the target wave functions is completely different. We find close agreement among all calculations for the strong transitions between low-lying states, whereas there remain serious discrepancies for the weak transitions as well as for transitions to highly excited states. The differences in the final results for the collision strengths are mainly due to differences in the structure description, specifically the inclusion of correlation effects, rather than the treatment of relativistic effects or problems with the validity of the three methods to describe the collision. Hence there is no indication that one approach is superior to another, until the convergence of both the target configuration and the close-coupling expansions have been fully established.

Observations of the green and red‐doublet emission lines have previously been realized for several comets. We present here a chemistry‐emission coupled model to study the production and loss mechanisms of the O(1S) and O(1D) states, which are responsible for the emission lines of interest for comet 67P/Churyumov‐Gerasimenko. The recent discovery of O2 in significant abundance relative to water 3.80 ± 0.85% within the coma of 67P has been taken into consideration for the first time in such models. We evaluate the effect of the presence of O2 on the green to red‐doublet emission intensity ratio, which is traditionally used to assess the CO2 abundance within cometary atmospheres. Model simulations, solving the continuity equation with transport, show that not taking O2 into account leads to an underestimation of the CO2 abundance within 67P, with a relative error of about 25%. This strongly suggests that the green to red‐doublet emission intensity ratio alone is not a proper tool for determining the CO2 abundance, as previously suggested. Indeed, there is no compelling reason why O2 would not be a common cometary volatile, making revision of earlier assessments regarding the CO2 abundance in cometary atmospheres necessary. The large uncertainties of the CO2 photodissociation cross section imply that more studies are required in order to better constrain the O(1S) and O(1D) production through this mechanism. Space weather phenomena, such as powerful solar flares, could be used as tools for doing so, providing additional information on a good estimation of the O2 abundance within cometary atmospheres.

Energies for the multiexcited states 1s 2 2s2pnl and 1s 2 2p 2 nl 4 P e,o (n ! 2) of B-like oxygen are calculated using Rayleigh-Ritz variation method with configuration interaction. The mass polarization and relativistic corrections are obtained with firstorder perturbation theory. Configuration structures of the high-lying multiexcited series are identified by energies and contribution to normalization of angular-spin components. These structures are further checked by calculations of relativistic corrections and fine structure splittings. Hyperfine parameters and hyperfine coupling constants are calculated for the first time. Wavelengths including quantum electrodynamic effect and higher-order relativistic corrections and lifetimes are also calculated. These results are compared with available results in the literature.
