Bremsstrahlung Resonances and Appearance-Potential Spectroscopy near the3dThresholds in Metallic Ba, La, and Ce

Abstract: instructive conversations on theoretical aspects of CDW states in linear chain systems, and to Pierre Mongeau and N. Phuan Ong on experimental aspects, in particular on NbSe 3 . I would like to thank Professor Paul Frampton for an illuminating conversation on his work and Dick Thompson for a useful discussion.

“…For the first time wide maxima in the emission spectra were observed experimentally in electron scattering from (solid) Ba, La and Ce [112,113]. Later these were explained theoretically [16] by relating the maxima to the virtual excitations of the 3d-subshell electrons. In [20] a powerful maximum was observed in the emission spectrum in electron-La collision.…”

“…͑While there is no 4 f electron in the ground state of La, there exists an excited bound 4 f electron below the Fermi level of the metal when a vacancy is created in the inner d shell. 28 It is this 4 f electron that is described as virtual. In Ce, this 4 f electron is distinguished from the one that is in the ground state-the valence band, because their wave functions and energies correspond to different ionic potentials.͒ This flip-flop interaction involving multiple scattering of the impinging electron E constitutes the autoionization decay channel.…”
