Bridge network performance, maintenance and optimisation under uncertainty: accomplishments and challenges

Abstract: This article presents a critical review of the state-of-the-art in the field of bridge network performance analysis, reliability assessment, maintenance management and optimisation. Previous accomplishments and results are summarised while stressing the aspects of the analysis of a transportation network, which are more challenging for a structural engineer. For instance, the bridge network is described as a spatially distributed system at a scale that is much larger than any individual structure. This require… Show more

“…At the beginning, these studies can be based on results reported for fixed bridges by Frangopol andLiu (2007), Frangopol (2011) and Frangopol and Bocchini (2012) and on the performance indicators reported by Saydam and Frangopol (2011) and Zhu and Frangopol (2012). …”

“…The analysis of VIS from a resilience engineering perspective is an emerging discourse for both researchers and policy makers. Various studies were recently conducted to analyse the performance and reliability of different types of vital infrastructures such as transport and water systems (Frangopol and Bocchini, 2012;Guidotti et al, 2017;Gardoni, 2018). While the literature on resilience engineering has been burgeoning, existing literature either focus on defining and conceptualizing resilience, and provide little guidance for designing resilient infrastructures.…”

“…Much research has been carried out to determine a life-cycle safety analysis of infrastructure assets, in order to determine likely periods of intervention. These methods include using advanced probabilistic methods (Frangopol & Bocchini, 2012;Frangopol, 2011), to using various methods of linear, nonlinear, and dynamic programming (Ng et al, 2011;Medury & Madanat, 2013).…”
