Bridges and Barriers to Developing and Conducting Interdisciplinary Graduate-Student Team Research

Abstract: Understanding complex socio-environmental problems requires specialists from multiple disciplines to integrate research efforts. Programs such as the National Science Foundation's Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship facilitate integrated research efforts and change the way academic institutions train future leaders and scientists. The University of Idaho and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center in Costa Rica collaborate on a joint research program focusing on biodi… Show more

“…Yet fostering successful interdisciplinary engagement remains a non-trivial challenge (Larson et al, 2011;McGuire, 1999;Morse et al, 2007;Salazar et al, 2012), particularly when team members may be geographically separated. Fostering the creation and success of interdisciplinary teams depends on (i) creating an environment that supports interdisciplinarity, (ii) crafting problems around which teams can focus their efforts, and (iii) access to the tools and infrastructure that can facilitate the activity of these teams.…”

“…The Central Arizona Phoenix Long-term ecological research site documents the long-term change in use and role in shaping the urban recreational, agricultural, and desert landscapes of today (Morse, Nielson-Pincus, Force, & Wulfhorts, 2007;Yukech, 2013).…”

“…For a true interpretive shift to take place the policy makers, anthropologists, ecologists, biologists and social scientists need to look beyond just details and agendas and listen to the problems at the field sites communicated from multiple entities. Forest policy as it gets to the roots of transferring meaning across many social issues and disciplines by using bracketing as in case study to look closely at the details and values behind the need for bioremediation and policy making (Morse et al, 2007;Yukech, 2013Yukech, , 2015.…”
