Bridging Disciplines: Applications of Forensic Science and Industrial Hemp

Abstract: Forensic laboratories are required to have analytical tools to confidently differentiate illegal substances such as marijuana from legal products (i.e., industrial hemp). The Achilles heel of industrial hemp is its association with marijuana. Industrial hemp from the Cannabis sativa L. plant is reported to be one of the strongest natural multipurpose fibers on earth. The Cannabis plant is a vigorous annual crop broadly separated into two classes: industrial hemp and marijuana. Up until the eighteenth century, … Show more

“…Es decir, la optimización en la dispersión y orientación de las fibras dentro de la mezcla concreta es crucial para el incremento de la resistencia a la tracción y la capacidad de carga del material compuesto. Estos descubrimientos apuntan hacia la mejora de los procesos de mezclado y las prácticas de colocación para realzar los beneficios derivados de la incorporación de fibra de vidrio AR en proyectos de infraestructura (Finley et al, 2022).…”

“…spontanea [156] . This early classification simply distinguished two species of Cannabis: marijuana (cannabis indica) and hemp (Cannabis sativa) [62] , then in 1974, Schultes, Klein, Plowman, and Lockwood have divided the cannabis genus into three distinct subspecies according to their cannabinoid composition, morphological, geographical, ecotypic or chemo-typic differences: Sativa L, Indica Lam, and Ruderalis. This last one only englobes wild varieties [146] , [74] .…”

“…Now, as an agricultural commodity it can be more broadly cultivated and developed for industrial purposes. Industrial hemp differs from marijuana in that it has less than 0.3% by dry mass of total THC (Δ-9-THC and the decarboxylated tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) and high levels of cannabidiol (Finley et al, 2022). The addition of a quantitative metric for hemp versus marijuana means that laboratories largely accustomed to qualitative analysis must now adopt quantitative or semi-quantitative methods.…”
