Bridging process engineering and supply chain design for agro-food processing chains

Abstract: the inefficiencies in the food production system (van der Goot et al., 2016). To guarantee a controlled quality of final consumer products, the food assembly industry mainly uses dry and purified intermediates, purchased from the agro-food industry. The production of these intermediates is disconnected from the production of the final consumer products, and requires water and energy-intensive processing steps (van der Goot et al., 2016). Additionally, the yield of processing generally reduces when higher purit… Show more

“…The collaboration that started almost 10 years ago has never stopped and became very fruitful. Three of the food technology students decided to apply for a PhD project within the ORL group, and have done some real interdisciplinary work (Jonkman, 2018, Stellingwerf, 2019, Buisman, 2019. I am convinced that the combination of Operations Research, Food and Sustainability Assessment will continue to exist and will be very useful in the challenges of current society.…”

“…Scholtz et al (2018) introduce several review papers of WSCs covering the use of various operations research (OR) methods: [e.g., 12,13], and more widely to use of biomass-based supply chains: [e.g., [14][15][16][17]. Furthermore, examples will be taken from literature on deterministic data-driven models (DDMs) of the WSCs in the IMEI that can be used for improving the decision support needed by IMEI [18]. These models also belong to a class of dynamic models that simulate or optimize WSCs in the DSS [7,19].…”
