Objectives This study focuses on the factors that encouraged engagement in research activities, as well as the barriers that restricted their involvement, until the final year of study at Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca, Faculty of Medicine. The main objectives of this study are to investigate potential disparities in research culture and student engagement in various research opportunities between Romanian and international medical graduates, as well as to conduct an examination of the observed patterns across various graduating years (2021–2023). Materials and methods A cross-sectional investigation was conducted among graduate students of the Faculty of Medicine at the Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. From 2021 to 2023, all graduate students from the Romanian and international programs of the faculty were asked to participate in the study by filling out an anonymous online questionnaire. The final sample included 572 participants, of whom 392 were students from the Romanian section and 180 were students from international programs. Results Motivation and personal interest drive research engagement, according to over half of graduates. For over one-third of graduates, institutional elements like financial support and education also play a major role, as does the desire to enhance their curriculum vitae. More than 25% of graduates value community influence, 70% of graduates attended medical congresses, 12–15% presented papers at medical conferences, 23% wrote medical articles, 10–15% published at least one scientific paper in medical journals, and 20% participated in medical school research projects. Comparative analysis showed that Romanian students start research earlier, attend more medical conferences, present posters, collect data for studies, and are more interested in publishing graduation thesis data in scientific journals. To encourage international students to participate in research, the study found that colleagues’ examples were more important, and both time and funds were key barriers. The research also shows that 2022 and 2023 graduates will organize more scientific conferences. According to the study, 2022 graduates began their research earlier than others. Conclusions To increase student engagement in research activities, medical schools should prioritize the promotion of positive factors, minimize common barriers, offer customized support and resources, encourage collaborative research activities, and facilitate cross-cultural learning.

Background Previous research highlights persistent differential attainment by ethnicity in medical education, wherein the perceived inclusiveness significantly influences ethnic minority students’ and trainees’ outcomes. Biased organizational practices and microaggressions exacerbate the challenges faced by ethnic minorities, leading to lower academic performance and higher dropout rates. Consequently, understanding ethnic minority GP-trainees’ experiences and perspectives regarding relevant educational aspects is crucial for addressing these disparities and cultivating a more inclusive environment within medical education. "Image missing" Research question We aimed to investigate the experiences of minority GP-trainees throughout their educational journey in Dutch GP-specialty training, emphasizing their challenges, sources of support, and suggestions for enhancing their learning environment. Method We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with minority GP trainees, employing purposive convenience sampling to ensure diversity across multiple dimensions. These included gender, age, ethnicity, social background, migration generation, educational stage, encountered challenges, sources of support, and the GP training institute attended. The analysis involved iterative, open and axial coding, followed by generating, reviewing, and defining themes. For a structured analysis of encountered microaggressions, we adopted Sue's Taxonomy of Microaggressions. Results All fourteen ethnic minority interviewees had faced educational barriers stemming from misunderstandings and stereotyping in a predominantly 'white' organization. These barriers impacted various aspects of their education, including professional identity formation, application, admission, assessment procedures, social networks, course content, and expert guidance. Microaggressions permeated throughout their educational journey, hindering their full expression and potential. Their ideal GP-specialty training emphasized uniqueness of all trainees, comprehensive staff engagement in inclusivity, robust diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)-policies, individual mentorship, transparent standards, concise language usage in test questions, and bias elimination through mandatory DEI staff training. Conclusion Ethnic minority GP-trainees in the Netherlands face significant challenges like biased assessment and admission, stereotyped course content, inadequate support networks, and microaggressions, putting them at risk for underperformance outcomes. They emphasize the need for inclusive training with robust DEI-policies to eliminate bias.
Introduction: Differential attainment (DA) – systematic differences in training and assessment outcomes when grouping individuals by demographic characteristics – is a pervasive problem in health professions education. Despite evidence of its prevalence, there have been few qualitative studies relating to disabled learners’ experiences of differential attainment. This represents a significant gap, as understanding disabled learners’ experiences is key to developing effective interventions that mitigate the impact of differential attainment. Methods: We used critical poetic inquiry to explore the lived experiences – including emotional, cultural, and contextual dimensions – of differential attainment for disabled health professions students. We constructed poems following a secondary analysis of a large interview dataset (n = 123 participants) from one institution. We focused on students who disclosed disability (n = 18), narrowing to health professions education (n = 10). Results: Poems reflect individuals’ experiences of DA. Four themes were constructed, within which we use poems to illustrate key connections: The perseverance stereotype, Managing the hidden curriculum, Privilege and access, and Surviving, not thriving. These themes illustrate the complex interplay of systemic barriers, ableist stereotypes, and privilege in the educational journey of disabled students. Discussion: The poems reveal the often-unseen struggles of disabled learners, challenging ableist perceptions and highlighting the necessity of inclusive practices. Our findings underscore the need for a shift in educational approaches, advocating for universal design and comprehensive support systems that consider the unique experiences of disabled learners. This study lays the groundwork for future research to develop interventions that address DA in a more inclusive and equitable manner, ensuring educational environments support all learners effectively.
