Brief Report: Improving Employment Interview Self-efficacy Among Adults with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities Using Virtual Interactive Training Agents (ViTA)

Abstract: This study evaluated the measurable impact of the use of virtual interactive training agents (ViTA) as a way to practice interviewing and gain confidence in responding to questions asked during job interviews. Of the total participants (n = 153), the majority were male (72.55%) with an average age of 21.71 years old (SD = 3.14 years). Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs; 64.71%) and intellectual disability (40%) were the most frequently reported diagnoses. Using a within-subjects repeated measures design, the repe… Show more

“…Again, the modern technologies, such as virtual reality, might be very helpful in gaining confidence. For example, virtual interactive training agents were found to increase self-efficacy skills and consequently outcomes for people with ASD (Burke et al, 2021 ). In addition to self-efficacy in autistic people, important consideration needs to be self-efficacy in parents of children with ASD.…”

“…Finally, it must be acknowledged that a fair body of the literature on VR applications for autism research cannot currently be categorised into any one discipline or area. In the online supplementary materials, we have labelled this research as "miscellaneous", and we include work on the integration of VR with biomarker and eye-tracking technology (Alcañiz et al, 2020) and inclusion of virtual avatars (Burke et al, 2021).…”

“…Previous research shows that role-playing and coaching in mixedreality environments lead to successful job interviews (Walker et al, 2016). Researchers have demonstrated positive outcomes from technology-aided instruction for individuals with IDD (Burke et al, 2021). Interactive virtual reality job interview practice using a virtual training agent improved interviewing skills of young adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and other developmental disabilities (Burke et al, 2018).…”
