Brief Report of Shaking Table Test on Masonry Building Strengthened with Ferrocement Layers

Abstract: Millions of non-engineered constructions in Indonesia are vulnerable to earthquake. Therefore, a simple, affordable and replicable method to strengthen the existing non-engineered construction in Indonesia is introduced. The retrofitting method described in this report is based on the principle of sandwich structures, having a masonry wall as core and covered on both sides with ferrocement layers. Numerical analysis result and shaking table test is included in this paper.

“…Material properties of the masonry wall used for the analysis are taken from the previous shaking table test in Tsukuba, 2014 [14]. The modulus elasticity of masonry wall is 5885 kgf/cm 2 (1 kgf/cm 2 = 0,098 MPa) with adhesion tensile strength of mortar (1pc:6sand) used for the masonry wall is 3.5 kgf/cm 2 as cited in the reference.…”

“…The government has made efforts to mitigate natural disasters by establishing technical guidelines for earthquake-safe houses (key requirements for safer houses) for the community to create safer buildings against earthquakes. As a technical guideline based on theory, the materials used when constructing simple houses are assumed to have met the requirements for the quality of concrete, reinforcement, and bricks [7].…”

“…The house only has non-structural components such as walls, roof and ceiling. The non-structural component of a simple building is not part of the main load working on a structure, but this component can be the main cause of earthquake losses [6]. Hollow brick has a very heavy material because it is made of mortar.…”
