Brief review of the mRNA vaccines COVID-19

Abstract: The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to claim victims worldwide, representing a health and socioeconomic challenge with few precedents in human history. The therapeutic agents used to treat COVID-19 infection are mostly aimed at avoiding the most serious complications and organ damage that in a percentage of cases can be fatal. Recently, the first COVID-19 vaccines have been authorised, starting a massive vaccination campaign worldwide. The COVID-19 vaccines authorized or under testing use different methods … Show more

“…Vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have been rapidly developed in order to limit the further spread of the virus and curb COVID-19 morbidity and mortality [6,7]. Overall, COVID-19 vaccines, by different mechanisms, induce innate and adaptive immune responses.…”

“…COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) continues to endanger socioeconomic and healthcare systems worldwide, with a fluctuating course taking a steep rise after the evolution of the delta variant [1]. A vaccine production race took place globally to counter the growing impact of the pandemic [2,3]. Up to the beginning of August 2021, 4.14 billion doses of vaccine were given worldwide, and 1.14 billion (14.6% of the world's population) are labeled fully vaccinated [4].…”

“…For a pandemic like COVID-19, vaccines are now the only powerful weapons available to stop the rapid advance of the COVID-19 pandemic [ 127 ]. The current scenario is dynamic, and there are a number of significant unknowns.…”

“…Lipid-based nanoparticles (LNPs) are vehicles of choice because these vehicles ensure the safety and integrity of the mRNA during manufacturing and transportation [ 27 ]. Upon entry into the cytosol, the mRNA is translated into the S protein, and an immune response is triggered when the protein enters the circulation [ 127 ]. Studies suggest that such vaccines are highly effective and safe for individuals over 16 years of age and hence provide the only most effective tool for the battle against COVID-19 [ 134 ].…”
