Bringing Geospatial Data Closer to Mobile Users: A Caching Approach Based on Vector Tiles for Wireless Multihop Scenarios

Abstract: Mobile applications based on geospatial data are nowadays extensively used to support people's daily activities. Despite the potential overlap among nearby users' geospatial data demands, it has not been feasible to share geospatial data with peer wireless devices directly. To address this issue, we designed a scheme based on vector tiles to organize spatial data and proposed a system named GeoTile for geospatial data caching and sharing. In GeoTile, a tile request from the mobile client relies on multihop com… Show more

“…After processing inside the server (which is described in our previous paper [32]), the HTTP response is generated and returned to the SG. The proxy at SG unpacks the HTTP response and calls the DTN API to publish this content into the DTN network.…”

“…In this experiment, we imagine that a user without network access is in need of a map of his surroundings. The map data is retrieved from several other nodes in the form of vector tiles which are data units that we propose in our former work [32]. Seven nodes take part in and their contacts are prearranged.…”

“…Geographic information-based applications such as navigation services, and electronic taxi services offer great convenience to daily life and contribute to the increasing popularity of personal mobile devices [1,2]. To achieve a better user experience, it is necessary to increase access speed while ensuring visual effects (i.e., significant information retention).…”

“…In consideration of the deficiencies of raster tiles, such as large total data size and lack of interaction ability with geographic elements, vector data-based web maps have gradually become a popular research subject, and vector tiles have consequently appeared [10,11]. MapBox promoted MapBox Streets in 2012, which provided vector tiles of the world and formed standards for MapBox vector tiles [12]. Google started using vector tiles in Google Streets in 2010, and Apple Maps began in 2012.…”
