Geospatial information is gaining immense interest and importance as we enter the era of highly developed transportation and communication. Despite the proliferation of cellular network and WiFi, on some occasions, users still face barriers to accessing geospatial data. In this paper, we design and implement a distributed prototype system with a delay/disruption tolerant network (DTN), named Geo-DMP, for cooperatively and opportunistically sharing and exchanging named geospatial contents in a device-to-device fashion. First of all, we construct a lightweight “content agent” module to bridge the gap between the application layer and the underlying DTN protocol stack. Afterwards, to profile the mobility history of users in practical geospatial environments, we present a map segmentation scheme based on road network and administrative subdivision information. Subsequently, we associate the regional movement history information with the content retrieval process to devise a hierarchical and region-oriented DTN routing scheme for both requests and responses. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments with real-world trajectories and complete implementations on the emulation platform composed of virtual machines. The experiments corroborate that Geo-DMP has the capability of successfully retrieving geospatial contents for users for most of the time under mobile circumstances with episodic connectivity. Moreover, en-route caches can be efficiently exploited to provision contents from multiple sources with less network resource consumption and shorter user-perceived latencies.

In the development of geographic information-based applications for mobile devices, achieving better access speed and visual effects is the main research aim. In this paper, we propose a new geographic data display method based on Geohash, namely GeohashTile, to improve the performance of traditional geographic data display methods in data indexing, data compression, and the projection of different granularities. First, we use the Geohash encoding system to represent coordinates, as well as to partition and index large-scale geographic data. The data compression and tile encoding is accomplished by Geohash. Second, to realize a direct conversion between Geohash and screen-pixel coordinates, we adopt the relative position projection method. Finally, we improve the calculation and rendering efficiency by using the intermediate result caching method. To evaluate the GeohashTile method, we have implemented the client and the server of the GeohashTile system, which is also evaluated in a real-world environment. The results show that Geohash encoding can accurately represent latitude and longitude coordinates in vector maps, while the GeohashTile framework has obvious advantages when requesting data volume and average load time compared to the state-of-the-art GeoTile system.

A PDF Tile Model for Geographic Map Data

Vector tile mapping is an important issue in web map research. At present, vector tile mapping requires the symbolization of geographic information, as supported by cartographic software, and the development of a corresponding symbolic database when web map services are provided for users. The development of PDF (portable document format) mapping makes it possible to use symbolized map data directly for web map services. This paper presents a PDF tile map model suitable for web map services, in order to provide a new solution for vector tile mapping. This paper details the construction and establishment method of the PDF tile map model and verifies that the model has the characteristics of a vector tile map and that this approach can provide web map services. In addition, this model has some other noticeable characteristics. First, the map service supported by this model does not require the support of cartographic software, and thus has low system software and hardware requirements. Second, the maps displayed in the service system can be directly used for high-quality map publishing. Third, the high popularity of the PDF format can promote the sharing of PDF tile maps and reduce the use threshold of ordinary users.
