This entry explores how artful encounters enlarge the scope of healthcare and can foster well‐being in ways that lie beyond the traditional reach of biomedicine. In the United States and internationally, arts programming is integrated alongside conventional medicine and used by community‐based organizations in serving their constituents and fostering social change. Meanwhile, the integration of the arts in medical education orients future clinicians to move between the generalities of science and the particularities of people's storied lives to foster holistic care and well‐being.
