British Museum Natural Radiocarbon Measurements VI

Abstract: Dates listed below are based on measurements made up to May 1968, and cover a period during which the technique of gas proportional counting using CO2 was gradually replaced by liquid scintillation counting using benzene. The gas counting measurements were carried out by the method and techniques previously described (Barker and Mackey, 1968) the only modifications being the replacement of some old electronic units by more stable solid-state equipment; proportional counting results are indicated in the text by… Show more

“…Kinnes 1988). A single date on antler from a shaft at the flint mine of Church Hill (BM-181: 5340 AE 150 BP [Barker et al 1969]) is more difficult to account for, but its large standard error and the fact that it is a single date not in agreement with multiple dates from other Sussex flint mines suggest caution, and indeed this date was rejected by Williams (1989). Outside southern Britain, early dates from mortuary monuments such as Giants' Hill 2, Lincolnshire (OxA-614: 5450 AE 80 BP) and Raisthorpe Manor, North Yorkshire (NPL-140: 5505 AE 145 BP) are outliers from other dates from the same sites, and have been attributed to the old wood effect Simpson 1986, 1991;Kinnes 1985Kinnes , 1988.…”

“…There is plenty of charcoal from Pin Hole, but it is all from levels with Late Upper Palaeolithic finds. As a complicating factor, identifications to species indicate that most of these charcoal fragments are likely to be Holocene in age, an observation confirmed by radiocarbon dating (Barker et al, 1969;Gilks, 1976).…”

“…The procedure adopted was to convert sample carbon to benzene according to the method of Barker, Burleigh, and Meeks (1969), but scaled up to produce at least 16 ml benzene per sample, and then assess the 14C content of the benzene in a liquid scintillation spectrometer. A preliminary outline account of the procedure has appeared elsewhere (Pearson and others, 1977).…”
