This paper analyzes the system architecture and technical characteristics of Radio over Fiber (ROF), and it proposed the communication network structure and the detailed technical solutions of the intelligent residential community which based on ROF technology. Finally, the paper discussed the technical problems during the implementation process.

I. INTRODUCTIONWith the increased demand of the bandwidth and mobility of the communication network for multimedia services, wireless spectrum resources are increasingly scarce. In order to resolve the current lack of wireless access spectrum resources, the limited bandwidth and the coverage areas, the ROF technology which integrated the optical communication and the broadband wireless access technology came into being.ROF technology, which combines the advantages of the fiber communication and wireless mobile communication, has solved the problems of long-distance broadband data transmission, flexible access terminal, and the electromagnetic interference. This provides the physical transmission support for the future integration of the access network. In the recent years, the researches in related technology also attracted wide attention.As the cross-integration of optical and wireless communications technology, ROF not only meet the requirements of the future development of communication technology, but also has many technical advantages. The wireless and optical communications complement each other in the aspects of the flexibility, the bandwidth and the environmental protection. The long-distance transmission is by the optical networks, and the last one mile access between the base station and the user is by the wireless transmission technology. ROF can provide the fixed access and the wireless access simultaneously. As the mature technology of wireless and optical communications, and the initial stage of cross of them, there are broad prospects for development. COMMUNITY
A. System architectureThe intelligent residential community communication system, which uses ROF technology, can provide the key services, including the power information gathering, the automatic area power distribution, the management of the electric vehicle charging pile, the intelligent home services, the unified display platform, the self-service payment terminals, the gathering of water and gas, the security monitoring system, and the high-speed broadband data network access. Compared with the existing FTTH intelligent residential community system, using ROF technology can not only provide the highspeed and high-bandwidth wireless access service, and also greatly increased the business types of the system access, and greatly reducing the installation and maintenance costs.The system architecture of the residential community communication network is shown in Figure 1.
