Broadband wide-angle dispersion measurements: Instrumental setup, alignment, and pitfalls

Abstract: The construction, alignment, and performance of a setup for broadband wide-angle dispersion measurements, with emphasis on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements, are presented in comprehensive detail. In contrast with most SPR instruments working with a monochromatic source, this setup takes advantage of a broadband/white light source and has full capability for automated angle vs. wavelength dispersion measurements for any arbitrary nanostructure array. A cylindrical prism is used rather than a triangu… Show more

“…The emitting beam from this slit is collected by a lens and then reflected to a camera by a reflection grating. As a result, the emitting beam of different wavelengths will be diffracted to different spatial locations on the camera 61,62 . In this configuration, the captured image can show the dispersion curves of this multilayer-chip, where the horizontal axis represents the reflected angle and the vertical axis represents the wavelength of the reflected beam, as shown in Fig.…”

“…A very good agreement, however, is still seen between experiment and theory in the subsequent figures, thereby demonstrating that the spectral response of the structures is very resilient to fabrication imperfections. Experimental measurements in reflection are made via the same homemade surface plasmon resonance spectrometer described in a previous work, 55 allowing for easy analysis over a wide range of incidence angles and wavelengths. The sample was attached onto the cylindrical prism of the measurement setup from the grating side via index matching gel, thus effectively providing a complete glass background.…”

“…SP dispersion measurements (reflectivity as a function of incidence angle and wavelength) were carried out using a homemade setup described by Farhang et al 36 Briefly, a broadband halogen source is incident on a cylindrical SiO 2 prism housing the sample to excite the plasmon at the alloy− air interface using the Kretschmann configuration (Figure S10c). The reflected light intensity was collected and analyzed using a spectrometer for different angles of incidence.…”
