Broken guidewire retrieval from the hip joint: A case report

Abstract: Hardware breakage during orthopaedic surgery especially closed intramedullary nailing is a nightmare for orthopaedic surgeons. During hip fracture surgery a mechanical failure of the guidewire or the reamer poses an additional risk of intrapelvic migration and neurovascular or visceral injury which can lead to devastating complications and litigation. We report a case of removal of the broken guidewire using a cannulated reamer & discectomy forceps and recommend some suggestions for prevention of this catastro… Show more

“…used a 3.5 mm cannulated screw for retrieval of a broken 1.25 mm guide pin within the second metatarsal bone 8 . These previously published reports focus on retrieval of broken guide wires at the time of intraoperative fixation 9,10 . Our technique, however, demonstrates success in the setting of k-wires retained in bone for several decades.…”

These can be removed using pituitary forceps, over-reaming open procedures or arthroscopy assisted [ 2 , 5 ]. However, an intramedullary broken or stuck implant is a different case scenario which inadvertently requires its removal.…”
