Brominated flame retardants in Canadian chicken egg yolks

Abstract: Chicken eggs categorised as conventional, omega-3 enriched, free range and organic were collected at grading stations in three regions of Canada between 2005 and 2006. Free run eggs, which were only available for collection from two regions, were also sampled during this time frame. Egg yolks from each of these egg types (n = 162) were analysed to determine brominated flame retardant levels, specifically polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD). PBDEs were detected in 100% of th… Show more

“…BDE 209 has been only recently investigated in hen eggs. The dominating of BDE 209 in home-produced eggs in the present study is consistent with the results found in eggs from the e-waste recycling site in Southeast China (Qin et al, 2011), the home-produced eggs or egg yolks from Belgium (Covaci et al, 2009) and Canada (Rawn et al, 2011), and the market eggs Table 2 Concentrations (ng/g lipid weight) of alternate halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) in home-produced eggs from three e-waste recycling sites and a reference site in South China.…”

“…b Sum of the investigated AHFRs. from Spain (Gómara et al, 2006), Ireland (Fernandes et al, 2009) and Canada (Rawn et al, 2011). For HBCDs, α-HBCD was the predominant diastereoisomers, contributing nearly 100% to ∑HBCDs concentrations in the present eggs.…”
