Bromotheoynic acid, a brominated acetylenic acid from the marine spongeTheonella swinhoei

Abstract: A new brominated C(17) acetylenic acid (1) designated as bromotheoynic acid has been isolated from the marine sponge Theonella swinhoei, collected off the coast of Tanegashima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The structure was determined on the basis of the analysis of its extensive 2D NMR spectroscopic data as well as HRMS. Bromotheoynic acid (1) inhibited maturation of starfish oocytes and cell division of fertilised starfish eggs. Bromotheoynic acid (1) also inhibited proliferation of human leukaemia U937 and … Show more

“…610 Bromoacetylene testafuran A 573 was isolated from Xestospongia testudinaria (Iwo Is., Kagoshima, Japan) along with four other polyacetylenes 574-577, all ve of which induced apidogenesis (stimulation of the differentiation of preadipocytes to adipocytes), and hence may act as leads for treatment of cardiovascular disorders. 611 An inhibitor of starsh egg maturation, bromotheoynic acid 578, was reported from Theonella swinhoei (Tanegashima, Kagoshima, Japan), 612 while two further bromopolyacetylenes 579 and 580 were obtained from Haliclona sp. (Sharm Obhur, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia).…”

“…A collection of the sponge Theonella swinhoei from Japanese waters (Tanegashima, Kagoshima Prefecture) has provided bromotheoynic acid ( 341 ) ( Figure 67 ) [ 134 ]. This new brominated C 17 acetylenic acid inhibits the cell proliferation of U937 and HL60 (human leukemia), A549 and H1299 (human lung), and HEK293 (human embryonic kidney) with values of IC 50 24, 27, 58, 72, and 40 mg/mL, respectively.…”

“…Sponges are a prolific source of specialized metabolites including rare fatty acid derivatives such as brominated acetylenic acids (Pham et al 1999;Aoki et al 2013;Ohta et al 2013;Dembitsky et al 2003). Several brominated fatty acids were described from Haliclona sponges (Alarif Walied et al 2013;Aratake et al 2009) including renierins from H. fulva (Cimino and De Stefano 1977).…”
