In recent years, the dynamic of spatial change has been increasing, influenced by processes linked to the transformation of traditional industrial regions into metropolitan areas. This is related to changes in function and administrative status, but above all to spatial changes. Examples of cities experiencing dynamic landscape changes from coal mining cities to modern metropolises can be found in the former coal basins of Central Europe – the Upper Silesian Metropolis in Poland and the Ostrava-Karviná Region in the Czechia. This study analysed the transformation of the landscape on the basis of land cover data from the years 2000, 2006, 2012 and 2018. The index of landscape change and the index of change of individual cover types were calculated, and on the basis of these indices the main processes responsible for the transformation of the landscape were determined. In the two study areas, similar changes in the landscape are taking place but at different rates. The main processes changing the landscape are suburbanization, reindustrialization and agricultural land abandonment. In space, they are manifested in an increase in the areas of residential, commercial and service development, the densification of the road network, and an increase in land allocated for new industrial plants. At the same time, the acreage of agricultural land (mainly arable fields, orchards and plantations but also open landscapes) is decreasing.

All data were obtained in the area of the post-industrial Ostrava agglomeration, which has undergone intensive transformation in the last decade [36]. The contribution of the article is not in the actual measurement and evaluation of vibration, but in the highlighting of the problem, which is not sufficiently solved and is neglected with regard to buildings in brownfield areas.…”

Ground-Borne Vibration Due to Construction Works with Respect to Brownfield Areas

Ground-borne vibration caused by mechanized construction works is the most common problem in built-up areas in general. In post-industrial cities, there are many building facilities in the category of brownfields. Parts of these buildings are often technically and culturally valuable buildings with varying degrees of decay. These are very susceptible to vibrations. The revitalization of brownfield areas employs a wide range of works and practices, among which are those that have adverse effects in the form of vibrations and shocks. This paper presents a theoretical study and original results concerning the seismic load on historical and dilapidated buildings in brownfield areas due to the ground-borne vibration caused by mechanized construction works. Original data from seismic measurements are related to the post-industrial Ostrava agglomeration, in the area of one of the biggest successfully revitalized brownfields in Central Europe. All measurements were evaluated in terms of both amplitude and frequency. The results of all measurements were processed in the form of attenuation curves.

Design and Verification of a Simple Approach to Brownfields Categorization

Brownfields have been the subject of research, evaluation, categorization and, of course, redevelopment for many years. The ABC(D) model (an assessment tool to identify different types of sites in terms of their potential) by the Concerted Action on Brownfield and Economic Regeneration Network (CABERNET) has been mentioned in many publications. The aim of the assessment method presented in this article is to use the basic essence of the categories in the ABC(D) model and to use our own very simple criteria. Our criteria are the result of many years of experience in the creation and management of the brownfield database. In 2017, the development potential of selected brownfields in the database of the Moravian-Silesian region (Czech Republic) was evaluated using our proposed procedure (three objective and one subjective criterion). In 2020, verification of the categories in regard to how correctly or incorrectly they were proposed was carried out. The results from this verification, including reasons for the accompanying inaccuracies, are a part of this article. We verified that the very simple evaluation procedure we proposed is functional and can be applied by database administrators continuously without the need to create complex datasets and statistical evaluations.
