“…In library science studies, browsing is described as different types of “looking” activities for which initial search criteria are only partly defined (Cove and Walsh, 1987). It can simply mean glances in a casual way (Bankapur, 1988).…”

“…Distinguishing the diverse types of browsing is another way that people define it. One of the most popular typologies was based on the information goal and the tactics to achieve it (Apted & Choo, 1971; Cove & Walsh, 1987, 1988; Herner, 1970), including very casually browsing without any goal, browsing less systematically with a vague goal, or very purposive browsing with a clear goal. Rice et al (2001) also proposed a general model of browsing, which presented a rich typology of browsing using multiple dimensions, including task context, internal and external influences, the processes used, and the consequences that follow from browsing.…”

“…While browsing is found in the major information seeking studies, each has a slightly different take on it. There are three different ways that people usually use to define browsing: a component of the overall information seeking process (Bates, 1989; Ellis, 1989; Ellis & Haugan, 1997), an independent information seeking strategy (Bates, 2007; Marchionini, 1997), and the diverse typologies of browsing (Apted & Choo, 1971; Cove & Walsh, 1987, 1988; Herner, 1970; Rice et al, 2001).…”

“…This latter categorization was first made in one of the earliest reviews of browsing in the literature (Herner, 1970) and was revised by Vickery (1977) as purposive, semipurposive and capricious. A somewhat similar categorization of browsing as systematic, exploratory and casual has been made by Marchionini (1995) and as search/directed, general purpose and serendipitous/random (Cove and Walsh, 1987;Catledge and Pitkow, 1995). A number of rather similar categorizations, generally three-way, have been proposed (Bawden, 1993a).…”
