Brucellosis in mammals of Costa Rica: An epidemiological survey

Abstract: Brucellosis has been an endemic disease of cattle and humans in Costa Rica since the beginning of XX century. However, brucellosis in sheep, goats, pigs, water buffaloes, horses and cetaceans, has not been reported in the country. We have performed a brucellosis survey in these host mammal species, from 1999–2016. In addition, we have documented the number of human brucellosis reported cases, from 2003–2016. The brucellosis seroprevalence in goat and sheep herds was 0.98% and 0.7% respectively, with no Brucell… Show more

“…The herd prevalence determined by Rose Bengal test for bovine brucellosis in each socioeconomical region is shown in parenthesis [8]. Prevalence in water buffalo is estimated in 21.7% [9]. Lineage I and III are dispersed along the territory, but are mainly present in the North-East region of CR, where livestock expansion predominates.…”

“…Socioeconomically, the country is divided in six regions: Northern, Central, Brunca, Chorotega, Caribbean Huetar and Central Pacific [7]; the Northern and Central regions are the main livestock farming areas. The only prevalent Brucella species in domestic livestock of CR is Brucella abortus, with a seroprevalence in cattle close to 11% and to 21.7% in water buffalo farms [8,9]. No information of brucellosis in CR terrestrial wildlife is available.…”

“…As with many pathogens, the population prevalence of brucellosis in cetaceans varies by species and location. In Costa Rica, six cetacean species have antibody positivity to B. ceti and the organism was cultured from 70% of stranded striped dolphins (Hernández-Mora et al, 2017). A recent serologic survey in Italy (Profeta et al, 2015) identified no brucella antibodies in 70 cetaceans over a 15 year sampling of stranded animals.…”

“…Among these animals, seven were feral pigs captured in the northeastern part of Martinique. With regard to the health status, results showed that all animals were RBT negative, which meant that Brucella was not detected, even in feral pigs and in pigs reared outdoors, although brucellosis occurs in North and South America, with a high prevalence in wild pigs (Hernàndez-Mora et al, 2017). After exposure to B. suis, common signs of brucellosis are abortion, temporary or permanent infertility, lameness in sows and painful testicles in boars.…”
