Bruxism

Abstract: Ictal-onset EEG shows right temporal slowing, followed by rhythmic theta activity over the right T4/T6 electrodes (double banana, LFF 1 Hz, HFF 70 Hz, sensitivity 10 uV/mm). (B) Seizure with time base set to 10 mm/s shows EMG artifact representing the bruxism phenomenon and subsequent tachycardia.

“…1 Ictal bruxism is a rare, distinct ictal phenomenon of TLE representing oro-alimentary automatisms involving masticatory muscles, induced by discharges involving limbic structures. 2,3 Ictal bruxism has been reported in association with both right and left HS [1][2][3] and is suspected to represent a "release" phenomenon produced by functional inactivation of inhibitory neocortical areas such as the frontobasal and cingulate regions. 4 Ictal bruxism is a localizing feature of TLE but it has no lateralizing value.…”

“…Primary sleep bruxism is a parasomnia characterized by brief, repetitive masticatory movements arising from abnormal stimulation of the ascending reticular activating system and activation of the masticatory central pattern generator 1 . Ictal bruxism is a rare, distinct ictal phenomenon of TLE representing oro‐alimentary automatisms involving masticatory muscles, induced by discharges involving limbic structures 2,3 . Ictal bruxism has been reported in association with both right and left HS 1–3 and is suspected to represent a “release” phenomenon produced by functional inactivation of inhibitory neocortical areas such as the frontobasal and cingulate regions 4 .…”
