Buckling and layer failure of composite laminated cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure

Abstract: The buckling and layer failure characteristics of composite laminated cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure were investigated through finite element analysis for underwater vehicle application. The Tsai-Wu failure criteria were used as the failure criteria for the buckling analysis. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to research the influence of the number of elements on the critical buckling pressure. ANSYS, a finite element program, successfully predicted the buckling pressure with 5.3–27.8% (linear)… Show more

“…Cai [13] presented a design procedure and calculated the buckling pressure of composite pressure shells subjected to external hydrostatic pressure based on the classical laminate theory. With the improvement of computer performance, finite element analysis has become an effective method to evaluate buckling failure of composite structures [14][15][16][17]. Mohammad [18] employed a triangular shell element having six nodes to investigate the nonlinear behavior of cylindrical shells with irregular mesh and complicated geometry, where total Lagrangian formulation was utilized considering the large deflection and rotation.…”

“…Similar shell finite elements were used by Ram and Babu (2002), and Barbosa and Ferreira (2009), Bakshi and Chakravorty (2014). ANSYS shell element "Shell 99" is a similar shell element ,which can be used for stability analysis of thin-walled composite structures; see, for example Öner et al (2007) and Shen et al (2017).…”
