Abstract:RNA polymerase (RNAP) is the workhorse of bacterial gene expression, transcribing rRNA and mRNA. Experiments found that a significant fraction of RNAPs in bacteria are nonspecifically bound to DNA, which is puzzling as these idle RNAPs could have produced more RNAs.
