Online support groups (OSGs) are common sources of both health information and social support. To augment existing qualitative understandings of member roles and identities in OSGs, this article presents a corpus-based investigation of shifts in member lexicogrammatical and discourse-semantic choices in a bipolar disorder OSG. In total, 8.4 million words in 57,000 posts were transformed into a structured, grammatically annotated corpus and investigated using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) as a theoretical framework, focusing on interpersonal and experiential meanings. The findings of mood and transitivity analyses show marked differences between new and veteran members' language choices over the course of membership in the OSG: particularly, in how veteran members provide advice, and in how new and veteran members ascribe and attribute bipolar disorder to both the self and others. Discussion addresses the affordances and limitations of corpus linguistics and SFL as strategies for providing quantitative support for key claims of earlier research in this field.

Higher education students’ attitudes toward statistics are of great importance as these may affect student performance and achievement in statistics learning. Despite some interest in attitude towards statistics among higher education students in language-related fields and the broader area of tertiary-level education, the different types of existing attitudes toward statistics might remain uncovered. Applying the Attitude system as an analytical framework, this study explores how higher education students use linguistic resources to indicate statistics-related attitude before, during and after learning. The narratives of learning statistics were obtained from a group of MA TEFL students (n=25) who participated in an introductory course on basic statistical concepts and procedures, among others. The study makes visible a great variety and a considerable variation of linguistic means which students use to express statistics-related attitude as Judgement, Appreciation and Affect, emerging over time. As such, this study advances methodological practices and training in the field.

Given trends in local, national, and global demographics, a need exists for educators in fields that serve older adults to provide innovative and engaging assignments that are relevant and applicable to the diverse contexts in which students are likely to find themselves as they pursue their careers. This article discusses a novel “elevator pitch” assignment that could be implemented in a number of ways to fit a variety of pedagogical methods and courses and further tailored to serve the needs of diverse student populations. For those working to actively and successfully recruit, train, and retain students in fields that serve older adults, such flexibility of assignments and delivery are likely to be acutely important as institutions, instructors, and students continue to adapt to rapidly changing developments such as those imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
