Abstract: A B S T R A C TParticipatory action research (PAR) draws theoretically on the concepts of symbolic interactionism, particularly with regard to the collaborative construction and production of meanings. This article describes how action research builds meaningful theory at the local level thereby enabling researchers, researcherparticipants and their local partners to foreground shared local understandings to critique more dominant discourses and policy positions regarding their circumstances. “…This study was a collaborative one and sat within a qualitative framework with quantitative elements. It was based in grounded theory (Glaser and Strauss 1999) and was also informed by the idea of situated knowledges, taking into account the construction of knowledge through lived and embodied experience (Genat 2009;Haraway 1991;Nightingale 2003). The interviews were held in formal and informal settings on campus using standard oral history techniques (Perks and Thomson 1998).…”

The legacy from Lewin emphasizing a democratic process is included as well as the participatory, collaborative, and co-creating elements that are pointed out as important dimensions of an action research approach (Genat 2009, Bradbury-Huang 2010, Taylor et al 2012. A significant aspect of action research is the outcome focus on action and practical solutions that distinguishes the field from other research approaches (Cronholm andGoldkuhl 2004, Sexton andLu 2009).…”

“…The style of engagement helps determine the quality and nature of the relationship, the depth of the emergent data, and the extent to which the researcher is regarded as a trustworthy ally capable of sharing and articulating any aspect of participants" world views (Genat, 2009). Ultimately, the sine qua non of authentic collaboration is ongoing reciprocity of effort, ideas, resources, and, most important, respect (Simon, 1994).…”
