Building Failure Causes in Nigeria and Mitigating Roles by Engineering Regulation and Monitoring

Abstract:

This paper assessed some of the reported cases of building failures and their possible causes in Nigeria between 1977 and 2011. The reported major failure causes are structural failure (SF), Carelessness (CLSS), poor workmanship (PW), poor supervision (PS), poor materials (PM), and quackery (Q).These causes of failure were subjected to Chi-Square statistical test at 5% significant level and 4 degree of freedom to know the most common cause of… Show more

“…Kuroshi condemned the way and manner construction processes were being managed and executed in the country because of the belief that all the professions should be involved in the building process. Tanko et al (2013) affirmed that quacks had penetrated the engineering profession at all levels, from design to construction and maintenance phases of engineering structures and services. They explicated how these activities have led to human and financial losses due to the engineering failure of buildings by pointing out typical examples of the failure of buildings either during or after construction being experienced regularly.…”

“…2. Education enlightenment on the public on the need to prevent building collapse rather than managing situations: Another top-ranked factor is enlightening the public, with the high frequency of building collapse witnessed, continuing professional development need be emphasised on modern practices to keep members abreast with the new trends in construction [41]. This broadens the knowledge of the public and is a conservative method of reducing building collapse.…”

“…Building failure and collapse are common occurrences in Nigeria; 64 reported building collapses between 1974 and 2011 resulted in approximately 300 fatalities (Tanko et al, 2013). Building failure and collapse have been a persistent problem in Nigeria for more than ten years, and they are becoming more frequent at an alarming rate (Hamma-adama and Kouder, 2017).…”
