Building stock energy modelling in the UK: the 3DStock method and the London Building Stock Model

Abstract: A brief history is provided of models of energy use in the UK building stock, with the focus on the non-domestic sector. This history leads to an account of the development, since 2009, of the 3DStock method for modelling complete building stocks, both domestic and non-domestic. The paper explains how 3DStock models are built and the data sources used. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship of premises (the floorspace occupied by organisations) to buildings. Energy use may be metered at the level of pr… Show more

“…They considered the UK social housing sector and argued that using the potential is difficult due to the constant changes of regulations which makes it difficult to develop long-term strategies. However, Steadman et al (2020) give an example of large-scale available data within the UK to monitor and benchmark the energy performance of buildings. Ding & Liu (2020) compared several data-driven methods to benchmark the energy performance of individual dwellings.…”

“…Several of the papers here highlight that definitions of retrofit may need to be modified. Steadman et al 2020). To successfully deliver retrofitting at scale, work is needed to ensure that these models are applicable for all buildings, including informal settlements in international contexts (Janda et al 2019).…”

“…In 2014 DECC commissioned the Building Energy Efficiency Survey (BEES) [39] to assess and understand how energy is used in the nondomestic stock across the different use categories. A comprehensive review of nondomestic stock modelling in the UK has been covered in Steadman et al [40]. These have typically been in the form of a building database containing activity class and floor areas.…”
